Concerns about financial elder abuse

Has financial elder abuse increased due to the coronavirus crisis, and is it true that 30,000 elderly people are victims of financial exploitation every year? Corrie van Brenk (50PLUS) wants to know this from Minister Hugo de Jonge of Health, Welfare and Sport. Her parliamentary questions stem from a recent Zembla broadcast on this topic.

Van Brenk also wants to know from the minister how many " local alliances " are active. These are networks of private and public participants who share their expertise to combat financial abuse of the elderly. Notaries also participate in these initiatives. Van Brenk would like to see every Dutch municipality establish such an alliance.

Tips
After the broadcast, Zembla offered several tips to prevent financial exploitation. Lonely elderly people are at greater risk. They are advised to ask their GP or neighborhood social team for help. Another piece of advice for elderly people is to think ahead: who will manage their finances if they are no longer able to do so themselves? They can stipulate this in a living will with a notary.
