Coronavirus: no forced home sales until at least July 1

Homeowners with overdue payments cannot be forced to sell their homes until at least July 1st. The Dutch Banking Association (NVB) reports that banks and insurers have reached an agreement with the central government on this matter. They believe it's important that homeowners can remain in their homes during the coronavirus crisis.

Employers and employees can count on financial support from the government when their income disappears. This allows many people to still pay their monthly expenses. If households still run into difficulties, mortgage lenders will look for suitable solutions, such as different installments or payment deferrals. A forced sale is not an option until at least July 1st.

Early detection
The forced sale of a home occurs approximately 500 times a year. This number is relatively low because mortgage lenders pay close attention to early detection of payment problems. By providing guidance to clients, forced sales are often prevented. The current exception does not apply to forced sales due to criminal activity, fraud, improper use of the property, threats, or vacancy.
