'Human contact is very important to me'

The Royal Dutch Notary Association (KNB) is continuously welcoming new members. Who are these people who choose a career in notarial practice? Why did they choose this profession, and what are their expectations? Each month, we spotlight a brand-new candidate civil-law notary. This time: Lex Heijmans, a member since April 25th.

Lex, how did you get into the notary profession?
I actually wanted to be a lawyer when I was younger. So I started a bachelor's degree in Dutch law in Tilburg and a master's degree in corporate law. In 2014, I was looking for an internship. Through the local football club, I knew one of the owners of Marks Wachters Notaries. Did he know a law firm I could apply to? He asked: why don't you join us? I did. I liked the work so much that I stayed. I then also studied notarial law part-time.

How did that extra study go?
Including the pre-master's program, it was a journey of almost six years. During my studies, I worked full-time and studied mainly on weekends and evenings. A program like that follows you like a shadow, so I did have to forgo a few weekend trips and nights out. The program took a bit longer than I anticipated. That's because I didn't put my social life completely on hold. I did celebrate Carnival, for example. And with the finish line in sight, it became easier and easier.

What do you like most about notarial work?
People come to you for a specific step in their personal life or as entrepreneurs. For example, to purchase a home or business property. You hear their background and why they're taking a certain action. It's really rewarding to be able to help them resolve a legal issue and to talk with them at the table. It's also wonderful to experience the celebratory moment when the deed is signed. Most clients are cheerful and happy when the deeds are signed. That human connection is very important to me.

What appeals to you about Marks Wachters?
It's a medium-sized office with two locations where about forty colleagues work. The average age is low for notary services, and we do a lot of fun things together. We recently moved to a modern building designed by an interior designer. It's modern, colorful, and accessible. The building and our way of working attract clients who align with us. We don't have to show up in suits like we used to; our clients don't either. I wear my white sneakers here and feel at home. I'm glad it all worked out this way: the studies were definitely worth it.
