Minister examines recommendations on protection of minors' assets
The Minister for Legal Protection, Franc Weerwind, will take another close look at the recommendations in the report "Supervision of the Custody of Parents and Guardians over the Assets of Minors." He is responding to parliamentary questions from Michiel van Nispen (SP).
The questions stem from a case in which a minor, having reached adulthood, discovered that his share of an inheritance had been consumed by his parent or guardian. Due to poor administration, he was no longer fully entitled to the inheritance he had received as a minor.
Incidents
Weerwind, however, questions whether this is a common and urgent social problem. In practice, he believes, it appears to be a matter of isolated incidents. He previously postponed the bill to strengthen the position of minors in inheritance law.
Report
The Minister acknowledges, however, that the position of minors in inheritance law is a concern. Therefore, he will be taking another close look at the recommendations made by researchers in the report "Supervision of the Administration of Parents and Guardians over the Assets of Minors." Weerwind will announce his findings on the report this fall.
