Jubilee bonus to 27,231 euros as of January 1, 2023
The government will reduce the jubilee gift to €27,231 effective January 1st of next year. According to State Secretary Marnix van Rij (Finance), this amount is the most logical choice, as it is equal to the one-time increased gift tax exemption between parents and children.
With the so-called "jubelton" (jubilee gift), parents can make a one-time tax-free gift of up to €106,671 to their children aged 18 to 40 for the purchase of a new home. This gift exemption was introduced in 2017 with the expectation that young people would use the money to pay off debt. In practice, they used it to buy a more expensive home.
Abolition in 2024
The coalition agreement already included the intention to abolish the gift tax exemption for owner-occupied homes. This proved impossible by January 1, 2023. The government now wants to implement this by January 1, 2024. According to Van Rij, "it would be wise to take a first substantial step already in 2023. Therefore, the government proposes to reduce the gift tax exemption for owner-occupied homes to €27,231 by January 1, 2023 (pdf, 94 kB) . Last week, it became clear that this is possible .
