Number of reports of unusual transactions increased
Last year, more than 2 million unusual transactions were reported. In 2022, the number of reported unusual transactions was just under 2 million. The number of transactions declared suspicious nearly doubled in 2023 compared to the previous year. This is evident from the 2023 annual report from the Financial Intelligence Unit-Netherlands (FIU).
A total of 180,578 transactions were declared suspicious last year. In 2022, there were 91,893. The total value of these suspicious transactions in 2023 was over €25 billion. This is a decrease compared to 2022, when it was over €30 billion. The FIU attributes this to the impact of unusual transactions with an exceptionally high value.
Notary
According to the annual report, notaries reported 1,051 unusual transactions last year. In 2022, there were 1,213. The number of notaries filing reports also decreased slightly, from 331 in 2022 to 320 in 2023. Last year, 374 unusual transactions reported by notaries were declared suspicious. In 2022, there were 387.
Declaration
The FIU attributes the increase in reports of unusual transactions to factors such as increased attention to the Wwft from reporting institutions and supervisory authorities, the increased scope of this law, and macroeconomic developments.
