Resolving lingering legacies
In the SBS6 program "Where is my inheritance?", presenter Dennis van der Geest and a team of experts attempt to resolve protracted inheritance disputes. One of those experts is notary Eric Feijen from Heerde. He not only contributed behind the scenes, but will also appear on the program on Thursday, December 7th.
It was a labor-intensive process, the preparation of which took several years. I thoroughly informed myself beforehand about the expectations, as a previous program on inheritances ultimately fell through. In the lead-up phase, we discussed 25 cases, of which five were retained. First, we heard the candidates' stories. Then they had to gather documents, such as land registry documents, wills, and correspondence.
Hopeless
A protracted inheritance case isn't resolved in an afternoon. Together with two family and inheritance lawyers, we analyzed whether a case had a chance of success or not. Some cases were time-barred or turned out differently than anticipated. We then outlined a plan of action. If we can successfully restart the conversation between the parties involved, much has already been achieved. Although in several cases, the court had to intervene to get things moving. Ultimately, a solution is very satisfying.
On the map
I'm participating in the program to help the families and to put the notary profession on the map. It's fantastic to talk about our profession and show what a notary does. I think notaries are often far too modest about that. As of December 31st, I'll no longer be a notary. But if there's a sequel to the series, I'd love to participate again.
