Budget Day: mandatory energy label C for offices from 1 January 2023

As of January 1, 2023, an office building must have at least an energy label C. If the building does not meet the requirements, it may no longer be used as an office building as of January 1, 2023. This is stipulated in the budget of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK). This requirement stems from the Building Decree 2012.

There are some exceptions to the requirement for an energy label C. For example, if the building is an office building that is used for a maximum of two years or if it is a listed building. The competent authority, such as the municipality, will take action if office owners do not comply with the regulations and their building therefore does not have an energy label C.

Education
The Ministry will begin providing information before the mandatory requirements become effective. Municipalities will then write to office owners to inform them of this requirement.
