Exploring options to strengthen gatekeeper safety
Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yesilgöz will be exploring various solutions in the coming period to further enhance the safety and sense of security among gatekeepers. She is doing this in collaboration with, among others, the Royal Dutch Association of Civil-Law Notaries (KNB). This is her response to parliamentary questions from Michiel van Nispen (SP) about criminal intimidation of gatekeepers when reporting unusual transactions.
The Ministry has recently spoken with the Public Prosecution Service, the Financial Intelligence Unit Netherlands (FIU), the National Information and Expertise Centre, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), the Association of Real Estate Agents, Appraisers and Rental Agents, the Dutch Association of Real Estate Agents (NVM), and the Royal Dutch Bank (KNB). These discussions will be continued and expanded to include other relevant parties, Yesilgöz stated in her responses . Options for further concrete measures will be explored.
Suspicious transaction
According to the minister, the reporting process for unusual transactions already incorporates several safeguards for the safety of those reporting. All reports are submitted to the FIU and are treated as state secrets. If the FIU designates an unusual transaction as "suspicious," only the company or office name of the reporter is included in the report to the law enforcement agencies. If the transaction concerns a small business and there is a specific threat, data in the criminal file can be anonymized. Standard anonymization of the name of the reporting agency is not possible.
