Karin Bloemen, Willie the Fireman and Aretha Franklin
On Friday, September 18, 2020, La Bloemen returns to her first love: singing at the Stadsgehoorzaal in Vlaardingen. Inspired by singers Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin, and the swinging funk, jazz, and soul sounds of the Old School Band, she creates a brand-new, pure, and musical show full of her own pieces and the finest covers from this rich repertoire. As a proud member of the Club of 200 at the always well-programmed Stadsgehoorzaal, she's our favorite theater spot. Want to know why?
The Flowers
Karin Bloemen is a singer and cabaret artist who has been attracting attention since 1983 with her striking appearance, her songs, and her vibrant performances and stage shows. A performance by La Bloemen is a unique experience. Whether it's a stage show or a concert, with her fabulous voice and expressive facial expressions, she captivates any audience. At times, she is exuberant and outgoing, at others, subdued and sensitive. It's no wonder she has won a Golden Harp, an Edison Award, and the Annie MG Schmidt Prize.
Aretha and Willie
Just like the singing diva, we too are inspired by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, who passed away far too early in 2018. Not only because of her vocal talents, but especially because she showed us the importance of visiting a notary in time.
Aretha had been married twice. She had four sons, with four different fathers. Afterward, she found a remarkable 35 years of happiness with her forever friend, retired firefighter Willie Wilkerson, with whom she lived for years and shared their joys and sorrows. Another formal wedding was no longer necessary for her. Been there, done that.
After Aretha's death, Willie was deeply saddened to discover that she hadn't made a will and realized that no cohabitation agreement had ever been drawn up. He inherited none of the hundreds of millions, but was left empty-handed and heartbroken. Aretha would never have wanted this. After her death, Willie was forced to take legal action against Aretha's children from previous relationships, with whom she had, in some cases, little or no contact. This unnecessarily damaged family relationships beyond repair.
Willie died of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in April of this year. He was disappointed and devastated. His heirs are expected to continue the battle for his estate.
Prevent unnecessary suffering; make a will. Before it's too late.
In the Netherlands, as in Michigan (USA), where this story took place, cohabitants are considered "strangers" under the legal regulations that determine who inherits from whom. This means that cohabitants generally do not inherit from each other, even if they have been living together for years. If unmarried cohabitants do wish to inherit from each other, this can only be done by making a will in which the partner is appointed as heir or legatee.
Summary and tip
Are you living together unmarried? Then it's wise to draw up a notarial cohabitation agreement and a will. We'd be happy to explain in a personal meeting why this can be important to you and why it can save you a lot of money. Don't make the mistake Aretha and Willie unintentionally made.

You better think.
